It's a post-truth thing. Boot sequences, connections opening, handshakes — and then it just overloads. Too much information, nothing filtered, nothing checked, control gone in a maelstrom of uncured data. Messy and glitchy on purpose. Mostly.
The visuals run on our own software. All generated live: L-systems, noise, 3D fractals, generative meshes, and a lot of feedback as post-effect, so the image keeps eating itself. Nothing pre-rendered.
Small frustration: you need 4K to see the details, and not everyone can — I can't even, my connection dies. The compression really doesn't like fast generative images. Crank the quality if you can.
Sound is a raw recording from our last session. We're recording a bunch of tracks right now, stuff we've been coding for the last couple of years and never took the time to record and jam on. Current approach: fuck it, play it violently, play it spontaneously. Suits us.
A bit too messy. That's alright with me. CRASH Server style.

C'est un truc post-vérité. Séquences de boot, connexions qui s'ouvrent, handshakes — et puis ça sature. Trop d'information, rien de filtré, rien de vérifié, le contrôle qui part dans un maelström de données non traitées. Glitché et bordélique, exprès. Enfin, à peu près.
Les visuels tournent sur notre propre logiciel. Tout est généré en direct : L-systems, bruit, fractales 3D, meshes génératifs, et beaucoup de feedback en post-effet, du coup l'image se bouffe elle-même. Rien de pré-rendu.
Petite frustration : il faut la 4K pour voir les détails, et tout le monde ne peut pas — moi non plus d'ailleurs, ma connexion suit pas. La compression déteste les images génératives qui bougent vite. Montez la qualité si vous pouvez.
Le son est un enregistrement brut de notre dernière session. On est en train d'enregistrer pas mal de morceaux, des trucs qu'on code depuis deux ans et qu'on a jamais pris le temps d'enregistrer et de jammer. Approche actuelle : on s'en fout, on joue violemment, on joue spontanément. Ça nous va bien.
Un peu trop le bordel. Ça me va. CRASH Server style.
Il y en aura d'autres. Un album, probablement.

A full on 38 min noise session made during the latest heat wave.
I'm honestly not sure I'm keeping the video online but for the moment it is.
It's a 38 minutes improvisation in video and audio, with a feeling of power and heat, scorching. The whole think is rendered in 4K (and should be watched in high def) (and weights 80 Go !!!) and was rendered with custom tools and improvised live coding sounds.

Crash Server is a live coding duo from Strasbourg, France, exploring the intersection of electronic music, generative art, algorithmic composition and digital culture.
One pattern. A live coding jam session where a single bass pattern tears itself apart — filtered, distorted, stretched, cut — until the screen breaks from the inside. Built on a layered sample loop with granular delay, feedback saturation and filtering, everything mutated in real time: sweep frequencies, resonance bursts, grain clouds, feedback decay. Nothing pre-recorded.

Inspiration for the behemoth of french hip hop NTM with the historic track "that's my people". This is not a cover, just inspiration for the starting melody.
every voice that goes through a machine comes out smaller. compression, digitisation, and then the slow forgetting. made a 360° glitch piece around that idea, with aggressive sound design.

it’s been a while since we last shared a live coding session. We actually do quite a few — maybe once a week or so — but we don’t record everything.
This one was a bit different. Somewhere between structure and letting go, between what we already know and what we’re still discovering. There was a bit of pressure too — but the good kind, the one that keeps you awake.
We really enjoyed playing it live, and I think there are some beautiful moments in it. It starts quite humbly (warm-up time), still a bit moody, and then slowly unfolds into something more intense — especially in the second half.
Of course, it can always be better, and it will. But that’s not really the point. These moments aren’t here to prove anything — just to experiment, to play, to be in it. And when everything suddenly aligns, even for a short time, it makes it all worth it.
Ça faisait un moment qu’on n’avait pas publié de session de live coding. On en fait pourtant pas mal — environ une fois par semaine — mais on ne les enregistre pas toutes.
Celle-ci était un peu différente. À mi-chemin entre structure et lâcher-prise, entre ce qu’on maîtrise et ce qu’on explore encore. Il y avait aussi un peu de pression — la bonne, celle qui maintient en éveil.
On a vraiment pris du plaisir à la jouer en live, et je pense qu’il y a de très beaux moments. Ça commence assez simplement (le temps de se chauffer), encore un peu sombre, puis ça se déploie progressivement vers quelque chose de plus intense — surtout dans la seconde moitié.
Bien sûr, ça pourrait toujours être mieux, et ça le sera. Mais ce n’est pas vraiment le but. Ces sessions ne sont pas là pour atteindre une forme de perfection, mais pour expérimenter, jouer, chercher. Et ces rares instants où tout s’aligne valent largement le reste.

A recording jam session, with a new version of our experimental ascii software tuned in desert theme. David Lynch was a subject of a concert we did last year at the karmen kamina in Strasbourg. I found the recording and well, i needed some sound to try my new visualisation software :)
A full blank page start, culminating in this plateau, drum heavy, we are both having a full blast coding, it's a transition phase, not shared that often, i think this one is worth it :) It's recorded @ nuance studio in Strasbourg. The code is less important there, than 2 codes having a blast together.
An important feature we added to our custom FoxDot, a sound visualizer allowing us to adapt more precisly to our coding.
Bonus points if you recognize the track from an iconic game !

Not perfect, but that bassline still hits. Found some ideas worth revisiting... and some segfaults I'd rather forget.

A live concert, quite challenging for us as we we organiser of the event as well as artists. So playing last, quite the challenge to find some energy left!

Une émission nocturne — laquelle, nul ne le sait, nul ne veut le savoir — transformée en jam session de live coding. Du moins, c'est ce qu'on en a fait, par charité.
Car il faut bien habiller cette chose. Cette symphonie de bouches qui s'ouvrent sans jamais produire quoi que ce soit qui ressemblerait, même de très loin, à une pensée. Chacun s'écoute débiter des approximations avec la conviction d'un caniche qui vient de retrouver sa balle.
Et Bardella. Bardella. Ce mystère ambulant. Que fait-il là ? Enfin, techniquement, nous le savons tous. Mais réellement ? On sent le briefing. On respire le briefing. C'est comme regarder quelqu'un réciter les instructions de montage d'une étagère IKEA en croyant déclamer du Racine.
